VirtualBox 4.3.24.

I have been struggling for a couple of weeks now to install virtual machine software on Slackware 14.1. VirtualBox was by no means my first choice as it did not support 64 bit windows, but with everything else failing I felt that needs must and tried repeatedly to setup windows 8.1 in a 32 bit version. Failure followed failure.

Then joy of joys, 1 finally realised that secure virtual machine extensions on the AMD-64 CPU were, by default, disabled in bios. Having enabled svm all the error messages for both kvm and virtualbox started changing so hope was kindled anew. Then VirtualBox announced the availablity of version 4.3.24. With nothing to loose, I installed the new verison and was immediately rewarded with the offer of 64 bit versions of Microsoft Windows when configuring a new guest OS.

I had to blow away the remenants of all previous attempts to build a guest Windows box but then at last, away it went, a real opensource VM. At last.

To check for svm or vmx use grep on /proc/cpuinfo.
